A Problem-Based Lesson for 9th Grade English, Language A, Year 4
Designed by Cynthia Granberg, Sonja London-Halll
Task
The Earth-Watch Foundation is developing a traveling exhibit called "Seeing and Knowing" with hopes of raising awareness of environmental concerns facing our world today. You are one of the students from across the nation that have been selected to create a visual narrative for the gallery. Your task is to use images and captions to tell the story of your own personal reaction to, connection with, or investment in a contemporary environmental issue.
Arizona State Standards
Language Arts; Standard 4
Students will use a variety of visual media and resources to gather, evaluate, and synthesize information, and to communicate with others.
VP-P1. Analyze and evaluate visual media for language, subject matter and visual techniques used to influence attitudes, decision making and cultural perceptions
VP-P2. Plan, organize, develop, produce and evaluate an effective multimedia presentation, using tools such as charts, photographs, maps, tables, posters, transparencies, slides and electronic media
Technology Standards
STANDARD 5: TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH TOOLS
Students will utilize technology-based research tools to locate and collect information pertinent to the task as well as evaluate and analyze information from a variety of sources.
Procedure:
Student Steps:
Use images you have collected to tell the story of your own personal reaction to, connection with, or investment in a contemporary environmental issue. Students will use Voice Thread as the final presentation method.
Collect images; they may be photos that you or someone you know has taken, photos from magazines or other published sources, or images from the internet. The images may be altered. Some class time will be provided to collect images.
Your visual essay must include a minimum of six images and no more than fifteen.
Put your images in either a file folder or an electronic image bank. Images that are hard copies will be scanned.
Each image must be accompanied by a caption. Not a caption that describes the image, but one that helps to tell your story. The images and captions must be sequenced so that you have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion to your essay.
Use a storyboard tool to create a rough draft of your visual narrative (images with captions).
Teacher conference with your rough draft materials to go over items 1 - 5.
This is the formative assessment for the unit "More Than Meets the Eye" in which students have investigated the power of the visual image to describe, explain, narrate, and persuade. Topics, issues and exemplars in the unit focused on the world we live in and its sustainability. Students were asked to consider how the immediacy and impact of a powerful image differs from the meaning and impact of words.
Teacher will present task description, timeline, and rubric.
Teacher will provide class time and tools for collection of images. (campus, computer lab, scanner, camera, etc.)
Teacher will hold story conference with students.
Teacher will assist in negotiating Voicethread website.
